MATTHEW BRYANT

Counsel

Matt is Counsel to the firm and works with clients, large and small, public and private, and has litigated, published and lectured on sub-prime mortgage fraud, insurance, and employment issues, including employers' liabilities and obligations, special employment, and domestic outsourcing. His litigation, dispute resolution, and appellate practice focuses on commercial and regulatory disputes, insurance coverage, business torts and fraud, and includes the firm's Employment Practice and related matters. In 2011, Matt was appointed to serve, and now actively sits, as an Arbitrator for Nassau County District Court. While Matt vigorously represents his clients, and has argued appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals and the State Appellate Division, he subscribes to the Lincolnian theory of litigation and seeks to protect our clients by keeping them out of court and through the regular use of ADR, where suitable, to achieve cost effective resolutions.

Some of Matt’s recent successes include:

  • In. Abetta Boiler and Welding Service, Inc. v. American International Specialty Lines Insurance Company, et al, Matt obtained a unanimous decision on appeal vindicating the firm's client, a wholesale insurance broker, in an insurance coverage and indemnification dispute for wrongful death and personal injury claims arising out of a Chinatown industrial kitchen explosion

  • In Bianca Jagger v. Katz Park Avenue Corp., et al, Matt obtained summary judgment dismissing Bianca Jagger’s multi-million dollar toxic mold claims against the property manager

  • In Bianco v. AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company, et al, Matt obtained a dismissal of fraud pleadings as lead joint-defense counsel.

  • In Great American Insurance Co. v. 460-474 Spring Street, LLC, et al, Matt obtained summary judgment dismissing a mortgagee’s force-placed insurer’s subrogation claim for multiple dwelling fire loss in New Jersey.

Matt graduated with honors from The George Washington University Law School where he interned for the Honorable United States District Court Judge Marvin J. Garbis in Baltimore, Maryland, and worked as a law clerk at the Institute for Justice, a non-profit public interest law group in the District of Columbia.  Matt grew up in Portland, Oregon and graduated cum laude from The University of Oregon after spending his senior year abroad at Saint-Petersburg State University in Russia. Before moving to Washington, D.C. to attend law school, Matt worked in the shipyard in Portland, Oregon as a labor specialist attaché to the machinist trade, assembling and laying-off crews and translating for Russian employees.  Matt originally joined Ohrenstein & Brown as an associate in the firm's Manhattan office and now lives on Long Island where he is active in his local and extended community.  He volunteers as an Arbitrator for the New York City Civil Court and is a volunteer advisor for the George Washington University’s Career Advisor Network.  Matt is certified to serve as a court appointed guardian, court evaluator, and attorney for incapacitated persons and is a member of New York State Bar Association, New York County Lawyers’ Association, New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Nassau County Bar Association where he also sits on the Committees for Community Relations and Public Education, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Commercial Litigation.
